Beginner's Guide to the Ethiopian Birr

February 22, 2025

The Ethiopian birr (ETB) is Ethiopia's official currency. Whether you're visiting, sending money, or living in Ethiopia, this guide covers the basics.

What Is the Birr?

  • Symbol: Br or ETB (Ethiopian Birr)
  • Subunit: 100 santim = 1 birr (santim coins: 1, 5, 10, 25, 50)
  • Banknotes: 5, 10, 50, 100, 200 birr
  • Coins: 1 birr, 50, 25, 10, 5, 1 santim

A Brief History

The birr was introduced in 1945, replacing the Ethiopian dollar. The name means "silver" in Amharic. The currency has been redenominated (1976) and has evolved with Ethiopia's economy. Today it is managed by the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE).

Exchange Rate

The birr's value against the US dollar and other currencies changes daily. The NBE sets a reference rate; commercial banks and forex bureaus trade within a band. Compare rates on Birr Value.

Using Birr Day to Day

  • Cash: Still widely used. Keep small denominations for taxis, tips, and small purchases.
  • Mobile money: TeleBirr and CBE Birr are growing fast. Many shops and services accept mobile payments.
  • Cards: Debit and credit cards work at some ATMs and hotels; coverage is limited compared to cash and mobile.

For Travelers

  • Bring USD or EUR to exchange; birr is not freely traded outside Ethiopia.
  • Exchange at banks or licensed bureaus for better rates than airports.
  • Declare large amounts at customs if required.

For Diaspora

  • Send money via Remitly, Wise, WorldRemit, etc. (see our Send Money page).
  • Recipients can get cash, bank deposit, or mobile wallet (TeleBirr).
  • Compare fees and exchange rates—they vary significantly.
