Many people first meet telebirr as a way to receive remittances or pay for airtime. But Ethio Telecom has upgraded telebirr from a basic wallet into a SuperApp, which bundles many services into one platform. If you already use telebirr to receive money, it helps to know what else the app can do.
telebirr Remit Is Not the Same as the telebirr Wallet
Before going further, it is worth clearing up a common mix-up. telebirr Remit is a separate app that Ethiopians abroad use to send money from a Visa card into a telebirr wallet in Ethiopia. The telebirr SuperApp described here is the main app used inside Ethiopia to hold and spend your balance. The money sent through telebirr Remit lands in your SuperApp wallet, where you can then use all the features below. If you want a focused overview of the diaspora sending tool, see the BirrValue article on Telebirr Remit.
What a SuperApp Adds
The telebirr SuperApp is an all-in-one app that lets you handle many daily tasks in one place. Beyond sending and receiving money, it supports telecom purchases, e-commerce payments, merchant and utility payments, fuel payments, café and restaurant payments, ticketing and transport, government service payments, and entertainment.
Mini-Apps
A key part of the SuperApp is its mini-apps platform. This lets telebirr host services from other companies inside the same app. Through mini-apps, you can reach services such as digital banking, flight and event ticketing, ride-hailing, and delivery without leaving telebirr. This design means the app can keep adding services over time.
Micro-Loans With Mela
telebirr offers a small-loan service called Mela, short for micro credit. Mela lends small amounts of digital money to individuals, merchants, and agents to help start or grow a small business or to cover short-term needs. You can activate Mela through a USSD short code or inside the SuperApp. As with any loan, borrow only what you can repay, and check the terms and any fees before you accept.
Shopping
The SuperApp connects to local online shopping options, sometimes described as Ethiopia's version of large online marketplaces. You can buy goods such as electronics and household items and pay directly with your telebirr balance, with local delivery.
How This Connects to Money From Abroad
When you receive a remittance into your telebirr wallet, that balance can be used across all these services. You do not have to cash it out first. You can pay bills, shop, buy airtime, or transfer it to a linked bank account through the app. This is one reason telebirr has become a common destination for diaspora transfers.
A Few Cautions
A SuperApp puts many services in one place, so keep your PIN private and be careful with links or messages that ask for your details. Only use official services inside the app. For loans and purchases, read the terms first.
Before you convert or receive a large remittance, compare providers on Send Money and check bank rates on BirrValue.
