TeleBirr is one of the easiest ways to receive money from abroad in Ethiopia. Here's how to set it up and use it.
What Is TeleBirr?
TeleBirr is Ethio Telecom's mobile money service. You can receive remittances directly into your TeleBirr wallet and then use the funds, transfer to a bank, or withdraw as cash.
Step 1: Register for TeleBirr
- Get an Ethio Telecom SIM if you don't have one.
- *Dial 809# or download the TeleBirr app.
- Register with your national ID or passport. You'll create a PIN.
- Activate your wallet. You may need to visit an agent for full activation.
Step 2: Receive Money from Abroad
Remittance providers that support TeleBirr include:
- Remitly – Choose "Mobile wallet" and select TeleBirr
- WorldRemit – Supports TeleBirr and CBE Birr
- Other providers – Check with Kifiya, Safaricom, and similar services
The sender needs:
- Your full name (as on your ID)
- Your TeleBirr-registered phone number
- To select "TeleBirr" or "Mobile wallet" as the payout option
Step 3: Get Your Money
- In-app: Funds appear in your TeleBirr balance, usually within minutes to a few hours.
- Withdraw: Cash out at a TeleBirr agent, or transfer to your bank account via the app.
- Spend: Pay bills, buy airtime, send to other TeleBirr users, or pay merchants.
Transferring TeleBirr to Your Bank
- Open the TeleBirr app
- Select "Transfer to Bank" or similar
- Choose your bank and enter your account number
- Enter amount and confirm
Fees may apply. Processing can be instant or take a few hours depending on the bank.
Tips
- Keep your PIN secret. Never share it.
- Verify the sender has your correct phone number and name.
