How to Transfer Money Between Ethiopian Banks

February 22, 2025

Sending money from one Ethiopian bank to another is easier than ever with mobile banking and digital channels. Here's how.

Mobile Banking Apps

Most banks (CBE, Awash, Abyssinia, Dashen, Wegagen, etc.) offer mobile apps. To transfer to another bank:

  1. Log in to your bank's app
  2. Select "Transfer" or "Send Money"
  3. Choose "Inter-bank transfer" (or similar)
  4. Enter recipient's account number and bank
  5. Confirm and authorize with PIN or OTP

Fees and limits vary by bank. Transfers are often same-day or next-day.

CBE Birr and TeleBirr

  • CBE Birr: If both sender and recipient use CBE Birr, transfers are instant and often free.
  • TeleBirr: Send to any TeleBirr user by phone number. No bank account needed for the recipient. Fees apply.
  • Bank to TeleBirr: Some banks allow pushing funds to TeleBirr; check your bank's app.

Branch and Agent Transfers

  • In-branch: Visit your bank, fill a transfer form, provide recipient details. Slower but useful for large amounts.
  • Agents: TeleBirr and some banks have agent networks. You can send cash; recipient collects at an agent.

What You'll Need

  • Your bank account or mobile wallet
  • Recipient's full name, account number, and bank name (or phone number for TeleBirr)
  • ID for in-branch transfers

Tips

  • Verify details: Wrong account numbers can send money to the wrong person. Double-check.
  • Fees: Compare transfer fees across banks and methods. Mobile is often cheapest.
  • Speed: Mobile transfers are fastest; branch transfers may take 1–2 days.
